Can You Show Your Teenager How To Stop Smoking Today?

Today's modern teenager is a bright intelligent outward going person. They have spent years going through education and the opportunities to learn are greater than they ever have been. Major issues are played out through every country and the modern teenager cannot fail to pick up on the problems and the changes that are happening around them.

The dangers of cigarette smoking have been in the forefront of everyday life for the last decade and at this moment more and more countries are passing laws to stop people smoking in public places. Yet a disturbing number of teenagers are failing to mentally adjust to this and are starting what everyone is telling them not to.

For a parent this is a nightmare situation and their battle is a very definite uphill struggle. But struggle you must and you have to find a way to help. The underlining question is: Why is your teenager smoking? Answer that and you're on the way to solving the problem.

Here are some reasons why they smoke, this is not a definitive list but it's a start

Don't get upset when I ask if you smoke, but if you do then asking them to stop when you can't is going to be almost impossible.

Teenagers will copy others, so if they have lots of friends who smoke their resistance is low.

Stress caused by unemployment, lack of money, worrying over exams and a general feeling that the world is against them.

Low self esteem and a lack of confidence.

Boredom resulting from no job, no hobby, no direction in life.

Everyone else does it, and I can stop whenever I want (except they really can't).

There are of course lots more but if you can recognize the root cause then maybe by working on a possible solution with them will show that you understand and you'll be respected for that. Your teenager will be more likely to respond to suggestions in stopping the smoking if their problem has been shared with you.

One method which I highly recommend simply because I've done it is Hypnotherapy. A teenagers mind is young, active and tremendously impressionable. I also know there's no way you're going to drag them down to a session with a Hypnotherapist because that would really ruin their street cred. But there is another way:

By playing a discreet CD which they can play in their own space at their own time, where no one can see what they're doing or up to could be the solution because it puts them in control. It's sneaky but after all they don't want to be ridiculed because that would have the opposite effect. It's a softly, softly approach to a major problem, and it's definitely worth a try. They need support and more importantly they need your support.
