Using A Shock Collar To Train Your Dog

Using A Shock Collar To Train Your Dog

Although many people have an adverse reaction when they think of using a shock collar

to train a dog with, the technique can be highly effective and quite safe for the animal when it is used correctly. Although we are using the term shock, we are not meeting to imply that the animal is suffering any undue pain. Quite the contrary, when used correctly, the special collars will only get the attention of the animal without causing any pain whatsoever.

The desired setting for the caller should be set to only provide an annoyance factor or the dog. Many people describe this to be simply the annoyance provide by a buzzing be or insect. The shock collar is not meant to punish the animal, it simply meant to get the animals attention when they are doing something wrong. Additionally, the specialty collars can be used for training dogs for various purposes such as retrieving.

When used correctly, the collars provide a way for the dog handler to communicate with the animal in ways that are not usually possible. For example, when training a dog to retrieve, if the animal is trying to be taught to respond to hand signals as to the direction of the fall animal, the dog may receive notification via the collar that their direction is not correct. This is not a punishment just an indication to the dog they are not performing correctly. When the correct direction is achieved by the animal there is no distraction supplied by the collar.

The way these devices work are twofold. One is the handheld remote device and the other devices that one that goes around the dog's neck. There are two electrodes in that part that fit against the dog's skin in these must be held firmly by tightening the collar enough so that significant contact with the skin is established. If it's too loose, the dog may not feel the shock.

The other device is the remote which also has a battery in it and has adjustments as to the level of shock desired. You can hold the collar in your hand and test the degree of shock for each level. In fact, I don't suggest using the device on your dog with that you first experiencing what the dog will feel. Again you only want to achieve a level of distraction and not a level of pain. If your dog yelps with the shock, you know it is too intense and that is not the level you wish.
