Treatments For Trench Mouth

Trench mouth is a condition which is not seen very often anymore

. There is a very good chance that the average dentist Palatine office won't see any cases of trench mouth, as it is a condition which is more commonly seen in third world countries at this point. Essentially, trench mouth is an extremely potent case of gum disease.

Trench mouth is a disease which gets its name from the prevalence of the condition during World War I. This was a war that was primarily conducted from a trench warfare perspective. Conditions in the trenches were terrible, and proper oral care was simply not possible. As a result, many soldiers developed extremely severe cases of gum disease. This is why condition is known as "trench mouth".

Trench mouth is a very serious condition. It indicates that gum disease has progressed to such a point that it may be starting to inflict damage on other systems in the body. Symptoms of the condition can be present all together, or individually, or in any combination. They include swelling, redness, bleeding gums, bad breath, and extreme pain in the gums. These symptoms are all serious even if they don't represent trench mouth, and should always be investigated by a dentist.

Trench mouth can lead to much more serious health conditions. By the time gum disease has progressed to this point it can start to contribute to other health problems such as increasing your risk of heart and kidney disease. Also, trench mouth can be so painful that it can make it very difficult to eat. This can make it very difficult to obtain proper nutrition.

Trench mouth is prevented through basic oral hygiene. As long as the recommendations for oral care which are provided by dentists are followed, and regular dental checkups are obtained, there should be no reason for someone to develop trench mouth in the developed world except in very rare cases. Because people in third world countries often don't have access to the standards of dental care which are the norm in other parts of the world, the disease is still seen more commonly in those areas.

When trench mouth is present, it can often be difficult to reverse the damage that the disease has done. A dentist will try to immediately install proper hygiene habits, and treat any immediately infected areas or damaged teeth with the recommended procedures. This could include prescribing antibiotics if infection is present, or fixing decayed teeth.
