Dogs are curious animals and will usually eat anything that they feel is tasty. Being scavengers by nature and meat eaters with a few veggies thrown in, there is not much they won't try once anyway.
But, the one place you think your dog is safe, at home, is the number one spot that he could be injured by accidentally ingesting common household items.
Bleach
This is a no brainer. It is hard to believe that any dog would ingest this, but it happens. Keep all bleach products away from animals and children to be absolutely safe.
A few symptoms of bleach poisoning are vomiting, drooling, and abdominal pain. As with humans, do not try to make your dog vomit, bleach is very caustic and could do more damage coming up.
Tylenol
It does not take much of these tablets to kill your dog. If your dog is small, only two tablets can kill him. Some signs that your pooch may have ingested your Tylenol are lethargy, drooling, and abdominal pain.
Batteries
Of course, here I am referring to mostly watch batteries because they are the easiest for your pet to ingest. A watch battery or any alkaline battery for that matter can cause a fatal ulceration of your pet's stomach.
Some signs and symptoms that your pooch may have munched on a battery are lethargy, vomiting, drooling. He probably will not be eating much.
Peach Pits
This is another thing I never knew was toxic to dogs. Most fruit pits and seeds are toxic to your pet. Some symptoms could include drooling, vomiting, and your pooch will be tired and weak.
Moth balls
Moth balls contain an insecticide which is dangerous to dogs. If your dog eats moth balls it can lead to liver failure. Symptoms of eating moth balls are vomiting and seizures. If your dog has ingested moth balls, just like bleach, do not try to make your dog vomit.
Detergents and Fabric Softeners
Between these two, fabric softeners are definitely more toxic than detergents, but they are all toxic in their own way.
Signs and symptoms include muscle weakness, vomiting, burns to the mouth, drooling, and could cause coma. Another product if ingested that you should not induce vomiting.
Antifreeze
Antifreeze is a big killer of dogs and other pets every year. Most people do not realize that to dogs antifreeze tastes sweet and they really like it. Unfortunately, ethylene glycol is toxic and is a big killer to many animals every year. To prevent this, always make sure antifreeze is well out of reach of animals and children.
Some symptoms that your dog may be showing due to antifreeze poisoning are most likely to be vomiting, seizures, lethargy, inability to walk properly, and if not treated promptly and immediately will lead to kidney failure and death.
Mouthwash
This seems like such an innocent product. It is one that I did not know was toxic to your dog. It is actually the mouthwashes that contain boric acid which is actually toxic. Signs and symptoms can include vomiting, drooling, seizures, and even coma.
Boric acid comes in a lot of household products such as contact lens cleaner and also denture cleaner.
Chocolate
This is such a yummy treat for humans that to think it is toxic is kind of hard to believe. It usually will take a large amount of chocolate to kill your dog, but smaller amounts have been known to also cause poisoning and death. Dark chocolate and Bakers chocolate used in cooking are the most toxic to your dog.
Some symptoms of chocolate poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, increased activity and urination. Take your dog to the vet immediately as if left untreated, these symptoms can progress to unusual heart rhythms and seizures.
Plants
Now there are lots of household plants that are most certainly toxic to dogs. Some of these include poinsettias, aloe, ivy, devil's ivy, and lilies. If your dog has ingested a household plant he may show signs of vomiting, and central nervous system excitement. A lot of these household plants will cause death.
As you may have noticed, all toxic substances have a lot of the same signs and symptoms. If your pooch is showing any of these, then a trip to your vet is most urgently needed.
