"top 5 Must-read Books For Kids In 2010"

Along with kids clothes, kids books must be the most gifted item for kids presents on special occasions.

The best book awards for 2010 are to be held in March and there will be an excellent selection again and no doubt a hard choice for judges. Here are 5 must-read books for kids this year as determined by the winners and shortlisted books of 2009 CNCA awards and these make perfect presents for kids.

* Perry Angel's Suitcase by Glenda MillardYounger Readers Book of the Year 2009In her tenth year of being a published writer of children's and young adult books, Glenda Millard wins yet another writing accolade with Perry Angel's Suitcase. This book comes as the third in the Kingdom Of Silk series and touches hearts as a young boy hangs on to a tatty suitcase with gold letters just trying to find his place in the world. The sign of a great children's book is one that strikes a chord with adults while the message behind it is not lost on the targeted age group. This book is one of those that will bring us closer to our kids and perhaps a little closer to solving our own journey in the world.Perry can't contemplate letting go of his suitcase or his friend Melody for fear of the feelings it gives him, but what is in his suitcase and why can't he let it go?

* Wish Pony by Catherine BatesonHonour Book Younger Readers Book of the Year 2009This is far from the first prestigious award Catherine Bateson has won for her children's writing. Many of her previous books have won outright, been honour books, or shortlisted for the CBCA awards since 2003. Catherine loves writing poetry as well and this is evident in her lyrical prose in her much loved writing. The Wish Pony deals with all of those confused feelings an older child experiences when the birth of a new sibling is imminent. Ruby is feeling a little abandoned when she hears her mum is having another baby because, quite frankly, she wonders why Mum even needs another one when she has Ruby. Plus, Ruby's best friend seems to have found someone even better to play with, but a special gift and perhaps even a little magic lifts this story out of the ordinary into the extraordinary. This is a book full of hope and delight for children and adults alike. A must have for anyone who's family is growing larger even if you tuck it away for a few years you'll be glad you did.

* Then by Morris GleitzmannHonour Book Younger Readers Book of the Year 2009Morris Gleitzman is absolutely no stranger to dealing with topics that many adults find both challenging and confronting, yet in his inimitable writing style he pulls off some of the most read children's literature in Australia. He is loved by this age group and will continue to be so for many reasons. Parents will find themselves drawn to this work, the second in a trilogy. The first book is called Once. These books deal with a ten year old boy and his six year old female friend who are desperately trying to escape getting taken to the concentration camp by the Nazi's. It helps kids to see outside of their world and through the eyes of another. Then is emotional and moving, and any child in the 8-12 age group will be mesmerized.

* Polar Boy by Sandy FussellShortlisted Book Younger Readers Book of the Year 2009Sandy Fussell has previously had published several books including the series Samurai Kids of which the fourth will be released this year. Polar Boy is a wonderful, action-packed look into life for a boy in the 13th century living in a polar community. This is not a common era to write about and Sandy does it with flair. The boy named Illuak is soon to become a man, but with this comes a prophecy of his destiny foretold by his grandmother. He will fight a Polar Bear to save his people. But Polar Bears are his greatest fear and soon he sees that there is much at stake. He learns that fear and bravery have many shapes and sizes, just like the dreaded bears. A wonderfully refreshing story that deals with the many mixed feelings growing up can bring.

* Audrey of the Outback by Christine HarrisShortlisted Book Younger Readers Book of the Year 2009Audrey Of The Outback comes in amongst a plethora of quality children's books by Christine Harris. This is the fisrt in the series and there are two more Audrey books also and they are jam-packed with life growing up in the Australian outback. Adults also love Audrey In The Outback as it brings back so many accurate memories for them.Audrey has a few problems to solve now her dad is working away. On top of that her brother tells her he's too old for playing games and her friend Stumpy gives an unexpected surprise along Audrey's adventures. If you have a child in mid to late primary school age they will love this book.

If you add any or all of these books to a kids present it might even sweeten up the age-old kids clothing gift...sock and undies.
