Tips on Using Boat Building Epoxy

The adhesive required in the boat building industry is called boat building epoxy

. Epoxy is a thermosetting polymer whose chemical name is polyepoxide. Epoxy is formed when its two constituents are mixed in a certain ratio. These constituents are resin (epoxide) and a hardener (polyamine). When these constituents are mixed together, they form a kind of boat glue or epoxy that ensures strength, stability, and sturdiness of the structure. The reason why epoxies are used instead of ordinary adhesives during boat building is that epoxies are waterproof and are highly resistant to other weather elements as well. In addition to boat building, epoxies are very efficient for repairing damaged boats.

While using epoxies, one needs to take certain things into consideration. To begin with, the two components, resin and hardener, should be mixed only in the specified mix ratio. Any attempt to speed up the process by changing the ratio is highly likely to backfire. In fact, many boat builders commit this mistake. Only a rightly and carefully prepared epoxy will give you the desired result. Therefore, it is important that you patiently prepare the epoxy and only according to the mix ratio.

It is also very important that you use adequate safety measures and wear all necessary protective gear while using an epoxy. Thick gloves, protective glasses and respirators are must have items. In addition to protective items, one must take care to not touch any part of one's body while working with epoxies with the gloves on, as this might lead to skin damage. And, if by mistake, you do end up getting some epoxy on your skin, you must immediately wash the affected area with soap and water. Even the equipment used in the process such as glue brushes, bristle roller, and plastic squeegee must be thoroughly cleaned after usage.

Before any application of the prepared epoxy, one must clear the surface thoroughly for better results. A plain cloth and water are adequate for cleaning up. Even isopropyl alcohol can be used for the purpose. But any tack cloth, recycled solvent, or acetone should never be used. Epoxies need protection from sunlight as well. Varnishes or UVA protective additives can be employed in this regard. While preparing your boat building epoxy, make sure that you maintain a high temperature of about 70F. Failure to maintain a high temperature might lead to a low quality epoxy that you would not like to use. Tips on Using Boat Building Epoxy
