The Measure of Your Dog
A dog is famously A Man's Best Friend.
But much though we like to look after our friends, even our best friends, we don't typically dress them up or buy them coats, raincoats or tweeds. So the relationship that many of us enjoy with our canine companions must be by any standard a unique and special one.
Just as we would look after and care for a child for whom we had responsiblity, so too we have a duty to our faithful pet.
Many domestic dogs wear collars. They are after all a vital means of identification should they become lost. Some of us will even buy our pets designer dog collars to add a touch of style to what otherwise is to all intents and purposes a purely perfunctory adornment.
But what may be less familiar to many is dog coats. Not just the bare-basic piece of waterproof to keep out the rain, that is, but a veritable array of hoodies, tweets, overcoats, hunter-coats, fashion clothing and step-in suits.
But that isn't all. Dogs, probably more so than people, do have a tendency to come in all shapes and sizes. One size most definitely doesn't fit all. And so dog coats, not unreasonably, do also come in a range of sizes. Guidelines are published on a breed-by-breed basis and so you can be confident that your common Chihuahua will take an Extra Small size of trouser suit whilst your Irish Wolfhound will require something at the opposite end of the scale (Superdog 2 to some) when being fitted out for a tartan jacket.
But if as it turns out your Giant Schnauzer is a little less giant than the average or your Boxer is a bit of heavyweight then it can be a good idea to take their measurements before ordering, and guidance is in fact available as to how this can be achieved.
We make poke fun, of course, and be frivolous, but those of us who care for our animals will want them to be warm, comfortable and happy. Dogs respond well to being pampered and fussed over so to look after them well is the least we can do to repay their loyalty and companionship.
