The revolution of petrol chainsaws

The revolution of petrol chainsaws

For the last 80 years or so, harvesting wood has been transformed from a labour intensive and time consuming task, to a quick and efficient global business, and it's all thanks to the chainsaw. The humble saw has come a long way and the newest models are extremely powerful and energy efficient.

Petrol chainsaws first made an appearance around 1927. They were huge machines requiring several men to operate. However they brought around a revolution, by allowing people to fell trees and forests quicker than ever before. Before this, men relied on the axe, a tool which required both strength and stamina, and only allowed you to fell as many trees as you were physically able to.

With the emergence of petrol chainsaws, workers could easily fell a tree within a couple of minutes and move on to the next one. And so the business of harvesting forests for their timber was born on a global scale. Trees were planted and then once mature, were brought back down for milling.

But it didn't stop there. As petrol chainsaws became smaller and more portable for forest workers, they were then adapted for a totally different use. Diamonds, combined with a chainsaw equals a concrete cutter. By scaling up the chainsaw and applying tiny diamond points to the steel blades, it becomes possible to slice through concrete and even granite. Now instead of blasting away rock, it can be cut away in manageable sizes for further processing. If you have a granite or marble worktop in your kitchen, this is most likely how it was made.

Despite being a revolutionary tool, there are still inherent dangers from using petrol chainsaws. Thousands of people are injured, or worse, every year. For all the benefits they have, they are still very dangerous to the user and those around them. And for that reason, they should not be taken for granted or used without respecting them and what their capabilities. But all in all the chainsaw really makes our lives so much easier. Everyday they transform peoples' lives and generate income for all those involved in the wood cutting industry.
