The Jetta Hybrid - Moving Into The Future

The Jetta Hybrid - Moving Into The Future

Volkswagen, long a proponent of choosing diesel power as opposed to hybrids when

it comes to fuel efficiency in their consumer vehicles, is finally giving in to popular demand. Coming in late 2012 is the newest version of the VW Jetta, now fitted with hybrid technology, placing it in direct competition with the Prius and various other hybrid cars that have captured a certain segment of the population's imagination and desire for a more fuel-efficient means of transportation.

The New Jetta

Carrying with it some impressive specs, the newest offering from VW - a company that is nothing if not venerable in worldwide markets - gets its running power from a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, promised to be much different from the current engine fitting the vehicles in Europe and elsewhere. The first generation of these hybrid vehicles will deliver 150 horsepower and will be paired with a 27-hp electric motor. With the two combined, the car will experience the benefit of 170 full horses, all of which to be delivered through a 7-speed transmission. A 1.1 kWh battery provides the juice for the electric motor.

Additional Specifications

Of course, when consumers start thinking about buying a hybrid, they want to know about fuel economy first and foremost. VW has promoted their new Jetta with the combined EPA rating of 45 mpg, which puts it ahead of the Civic's combined score and well ahead of their current model's TDI version, which is rated at 34 mpg. It seems that VW is not just interested in producing a car that can beat other similar vehicles in the department of fuel economy. Acutely aware that one of the oft-leveled criticisms of hybrid vehicles is their lack of get-up-and-go, they have promised that this particular hybrid will be one of the fastest on the market.

Visual Changes

Regardless of fuel economy, power, and speed, many consumers will continue to purchase vehicles based on looks first and specs second. VW, creator of one of the most visually striking vehicles of all time, the Beetle, is of course well aware of this fact. Changes to the hybrid Jetta from a visual standpoint will include a front air dam and a rear diffuser, along with a spoiler, all of which contribute not just to appearance but also to a reduction in drag. The vehicle is expected to go on sale at dealers across the country with a base price of $24,995. For those who want looks, power, and fuel efficiency in their vehicle of choice, it may be worth going to a dealership for a test drive.
