The brand new 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid will now be using a lithium-ion battery and its fuel economy has risen from 41 mpg to 44 mpg
. The Civic Hybrid is today in second-place for fuel economy for cars that continue to rely on fossil fuels. This excellent improvement in fuel economy makes it superior to the Lexus CT 200h. It is considered the most fuel-efficient 4 door on the market today.
The fifth generation hybrid powertrain system that the 2012 Civic Hybrid utilizes is called the Integrated Motor Assist, that is an electric motor/generator that is a thin, pancake-type. Much like the devices employed in Ford and Toyota hybrids, Honda's system assists the gasoline engine by being contained between the transmission and engine. The electric powered motor supports the gas engine however it can be powered by electric on it's own for short distances. For particular situations, the Honda can run on electrical power only but all of the engine parts still move. When the car stops the engine shuts off, then starts up again when it is time to go, like other hybrid vehicles.
With the switch to lithium-ion batteries, the 2012 Civic Hybrid also features a larger gasoline engine than before. The transmission works similar to a 10-speed bicycle which features a drive pulley and a driven pulley which are linked with a steel belt. This is a mix of a manual transmission along with a conventional geared automatic transmission.
The 2012 Civic Hybrid has certainly garnered its place among the elite hybrid cars with its upgraded battery and improved fuel efficiency. This enhancement has definitely made Prius start looking over its shoulder.
