The Heritage Trail 5 Day Cycling Holiday 2012.


Lismore cycling holidays introduces the 1st of 2 new place to place 5 day holidays for 2012. The Heritage Trail will travel through 5 Counties and visit 7 Heritage Towns, the tour will have the services of a guide and full backup service. Luggage will be transported in advance to your next stopover each day.

The full package will include accommodation in 3* and 4* hotels with breakfast and evening meal on a per person sharing a room basis, fully equipped aluminium framed bicycles with 21 gears will be provided to make your pedalling that much easier.

Day 1 Lismore "" Cahir.

The Heritage trail will start from the award winning town of Lismore Co Waterford. Lismore is a town steeped in tradition with many well preserved old and beautiful buildings dominated by the castle which over shadows the River Blackwater, the river is often referred to as the Irish Rhine.

The tour leaves Lismore travelling by the River Blackwater on the first leg of the journey to Cahir, 1st place of interest will be Mount Melleray home to a community of Cistercian monks since 1832. From here the tour meanders through the Knockmealdown Mountains to the Vee and Clogheen (meaning little stone in irish) the scenery on this part of the route is spectacular taking in Baylough before the drop down to the Vee and its expansive view of the Golden Vale.

From Clogheen the tour continues on to the Mitchelstown Caves the Caves were discovered in 1833 when a farm labourer called Michael Condon was quarrying limestone and dropped his crowbar into a cavern. From here the tour continues onto the final destination of the day the town of Cahir

Day 2 Cahir "" Templemore.

Day 2 starts with a visit to Cahir Castle which is a well preserved defense castle Built on the banks of the river Suir after this we cycle the short route 2km by the river to The Swiss Cottage A delightful "cottage orn" built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall .

From here we move onto Cashel home of one of the most visited tourist attractions in Ireland. The Rock of Cashel was the seat of the High Kings of Munster, follow in the footsteps of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and explore this iconic site.

Our next stop is Holycross Abbey the Abbey is situated between the towns of Cashel and Thurles. It was founded in 1169 by the King of Thomond of the Cistercian monks. A relic of the true cross owned by the King was given to the Abbey. It became a national monument on the 30th October 1880.

The days touring ends in the market town of Templemore ( meaning large temple in irish) the town is nestled under the Devils Bit Mountain, Templemore was structured or created from an idea of Sir John Craven Carden, as a garrison town. The Military Barracks was built in 1810 for accommodation for 1000 British Forces.

Day 3 Templemore "" Birr.

From Templemore you cycle to Roscrea one of the oldest most historic towns in Ireland, Visit Roscrea Castle/ Damer House built in 1213 by command from King John of England, some of the antiquities and monuments date as far back as the Stone Age.

We now leave Co Tipperary behind as we head for the Village of Shinrone in Co Offaly where we stop off at Bellefield House Garden to feast your eyes on a magnificent display of colour.

Our final stop of the day is the Georgian town of Birr located in the centre of Ireland Birr has many places of interest most notable being Birr Castle Demense developed by the Parsons family over the last four hundred years. During this period, the Parsons family made unique contributions to astronomy, photography, engineering and botany, cycle through Oxmanton and Johns Malls.

Day 4. Birr "" Abbeyleix.

The tour sets out from Birr and continues on to Kinitty a coffee stop at Kinitty castle will give an opportune time to admire this unique building which dates back to the year 1200, today the Castle is a gem of neo gothic architecture.

After languishing in this stately pile we move on to tackle the Slieve Bloom Mountains (highest point 527m) which form a natural link between the Counties Laois and Offaly this is the most difficult part of the tour but you will be well rewarded by the fantastic views, we take it easy going down the hill to our next stop the small town of Mountrath which is precisely midway between Dublin and Cork, after some refreshments we move onto our final destination of the day the compact Heritage Town of Abbeyleix.

Day 5. Abbeyleix "" Kilkenny.

The final day of our tour, we leave Abbeyleix and cycle on mainly flat roads through open countryside towards the medieval city of Kilkenny, our first stop is the town of Rathdowney which has an outlet centre, from here we travel to the pretty little towns of Johnstown and Freshford before we arrive in Kilkenny which has an abundance of historic buildings. It"s possible to take a guided cycling tour of Kilkenny with a local guide for an extra charge.

Most stopover towns will have live entertainment each night and during the summer months it"s possible you will come across local festivals.

All the equipment required to make your cycling holiday an enjoyable one will be provided by Lismore Cycling Holidays.

The pace of the tour is up to each individual, you may take as long as you like to get to your stopover as there is no pressure on anybody to arrive at a set time, if you see something that interests you stop and enjoy, take a coffee break whenever you want.

From Kilkenny you may travel to other destinations in Ireland or your place of departure by rail or bus.
