Some Options For Nail Fungus Treatment

Nail fungus generally begins as a small colored speck in nails of fingers or toes. With time, the infection spreads and can cause discoloration, thickening and breakage. Unfortunately, this type of infection will not go away on its own, and if untreated can last indefinitely. The good news is that there is an appropriate nail fungus treatment that will prevent this from happening.

Different microscopic organisms can cause this condition to occur. Dermatophyte fungi are one kind of possible organism. Other possibilities include yeasts as well as molds. All of these thrive in warm, wet conditions and pervade swimming pools and showers.

Because of this, infections typically affect the toes more often. This is because toes are contained in dark, sometimes moist environments when shoes are worn. The microorganisms gain entry through cuts in skin or in the areas directly surrounding nails. Repeated exposure to the right conditions is necessary for infection to occur; one exposure is generally insufficient.

The symptoms begin with a colored dot. This white or yellow colored infection will then spread. It may also turn nails a dark shade as materials build underneath it. Nails can become thickened, distorted and crumble. Sometimes, onycholysis occurs. This is when nails begin to detach or protrude from fingers or toes. An odor can also be detected in some cases. A general unhealthy appearance is common, and nails will be dull, brittle, and lack shine.

Because this can persist if left untreated, a doctors visit is key as soon as the initial spot occurs. Doctors will typically take a sample from under the nail for testing. The sample can be analyzed with a microscope or through lab culture analysis. Depending if infection has a fungal, bacterial or yeast origin, treatment will vary.

Over the counter medications are sometimes insufficient. Often infections reoccur when using this form of treatment. Medications taken orally are more effective. Oral medications are prescribed for patients with diabetes, cellulitis, or painful symptoms. Especially unattractive nails are also treated in this manner.

The oral version medication must be continually taken for six weeks up to three months. Its effects may not manifest themselves until later on. The process involves replacement of the old nail with a new and healthy one, and this takes time. It is ideal if the area is kept away from warm and moist conditions to aid healing. Another aid is the use of topical type medications at the same time.

Lacquer is another option. It is applied every day for a weeks time. After a week, the built up layers are removed with alcohol and the process is repeated. This is used for cases that are less serious, and takes longer for full effect. Symptoms can continue to be observed for up to a year if using this treatment method.

Sometimes, for very severe cases of infection that are causing high levels of pain, surgery is recommended. During this the nail is removed completely. It may take around a year for a new one to replace it.

As soon as it is suspected, nail fungus needs to be treated. If it is not, it spreads and worsens. This results in serious damage that continues indefinitely. Medications are available that solve these problems, and are prescribed depending on the severity of infection. These range from topical forms to surgery for the most extreme cases.
