Simple steps 'can avoid the need to raid savings accounts for holidays'

An expert has advised on how people can avoid using their credit card and savings accounts to afford their summer holiday.

Families planning to head abroad on their summer holidays this year can avoid the necessity of racking up credit card debt or dipping into their savings accounts by taking simple budgetary measures, an expert has said.

Research published by Santander recently (July 3rd) revealed that parents looking to take a single trip travel break with their children over the coming months could be hit by premiums of up to 85 per cent on the cost of their holiday package as travel companies hike the price of their deals during school holidays.

In the period between mid-July and mid-August, prices for holidays increase by 38 per cent during that month-long timeframe, with UK breaks being put up by 30 per cent over the same period.

Portuguese vacations are hiked by the largest amount, with any trip to the Iberian nation likely to cost as much as 85 per cent more in that month-long phase than at any other time of the year.

Meanwhile, a study conducted by charity Elizabeth Finn Care - which was published on July 2nd - found that 38 per cent of parents with children at school believe that their current account balance will end up in the red after the seasonal school break.

However, according to Bob Atkinson of travelsupermarket.com, there are several measures that can be taken by families this year to avoid such unnecessary additional costs.

People should compare savings on flights and single trip insurance, the expert remarked.

"Anybody on even a modest income should be able to holiday this summer at some quite low prices as long as [you] are savvy," he added.

"Travel mid-week wherever you can and set yourself a final budget."

Mr Atkinson went on to state that the most attractive destinations for bargain-hunters should include eurozone countries such as Greece and Spain.
