Should I Take The Motorcycle Skills Exam Or A Safety Course?

Are you ready to hit the road on your motorcycle and need to get a license in order to do so

? There are a few pointers that you might want to consider when deciding if you are simply going to go straight for the skills test or take the safety course.

As you can probably imagine both alternatives have their pros and cons, so choosing one over the other will be a decision that you will have to make for yourself. In some states, however, you may not have a choice.

Benefits Of Taking The Skills Test Only

There are some benefits to going straight for the skills test in order to get your license. Perhaps the biggest advantage of doing so is the fact that you don't have to rely on the scheduling of a safety course, and you don't have to sit in a classroom for 16 hours or however long the course is scheduled to take. If you're not a big fan of classrooms, then this might be your best option.

If you opt to take the knowledge exam and skills test, you can schedule them at a time that works for you. You won't be at the mercy of a safety course schedule and in many cases can get your tests scheduled right away so you can get your license more quickly.

Benefits Of Taking A Safety Course

On the flip side there are benefits of taking a safety course for learning how to ride your motorcycle safely. During the course you will get a lot of hands on training as well as extra knowledge about staying safe on your motorcycle in various situations.

If you're simply not comfortable with taking exams and being put on the spot in high pressure situations, then the safety course is definitely the way to go. Taking a skills test on your motorcycle in front of an instructor can be quite a nerve wracking experience, and many people have trouble performing well in this type of situation. The safety course will alleviate a lot of that stress and pressure and will help you get your motorcycle license in a stress free and friendly setting.

Both Required?

A motorcycle permit is most likely required and in some cases you might be required to do both the safety course as well as the skills test. If this is the case in your state, then of course you won't be able to choose between the two. Each state is different so check with your local motorcycle vehicle department to see what rules have been put in place.
