The Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals are trying to end losing streaks. Still, it's possible both will leave Glendale at the top of the NFC West on Sunday.The Seahawks, who will likely welcome back Matt Hasselbeck, try to stay in first place and prevent the Cardinals from possibly gaining a share of the division lead by completing a sweep of this season series.The NFC West is the only division that doesn't have a team with a winning record, making the race wide open. Seattle (4-4), which has lost its last two, is tied with St. Louis at the top and is a game ahead of Arizona (3-5). The two-time reigning division champion Cardinals are a game in front of last-place San Francisco, which hosts the Rams on Sunday.The Seahawks share first place despite being outscored 74-10 the last two games, including a 41-7 home loss to the New York Giants last Sunday. A week after giving up 545 yards of offense to Oakland, Seattle was outgained 487-162 by the Giants.
The defense has particularly struggled against the run the last three weeks after that had been the team's strength. The Seahawks held opponents to an average 70.4 yards rushing through five games, but they've yielded 183.0 per game over the last three.Injuries have played a big part, with defensive linemen Colin Cole (high ankle sprain), Red Bryant (knee) and Brandon Mebane (calf) missing time. Mebane, who has missed the last four games, should return this week."We've been trying too hard and stuff," coach Pete Carroll said. "That's one of the big issues that I'm always trying to keep these guys from getting to that point because once you start pressing to try to make things happen ... then you get outside of the discipline of the defense and you can try too hard."Carroll expects Hasselbeck to return after he missed last week with a concussion. Starting in his place, Charlie Whitehurst went 12 of 23 for 113 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Hasselbeck was cleared to return to practice Wednesday."We're fortunate, with the hits that we took in the last couple weeks, we're fortunate to be where we are right now," Carroll said. "We have a chance to keep going here with our division, which is the goal of our program -- to own this division."The Cardinals could make up a lot of ground in the near future. Three of their next four games are against NFC West opponents and they play four of their next five at home, where they are 2-1 this season -- their Oct. 31 loss to Tampa Bay was by three points.Arizona followed that defeat with a 27-24 overtime loss at Minnesota last Sunday, blowing a 14-point lead in the final 3:34 of regulation."Two weeks in a row now at the end of the game we've had chances to win the game and it's hard," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Emotionally it takes a toll on you from that standpoint, so sitting here on Monday it's hard to look ahead, but I think that's where our focus has to be."
Derek Anderson made his first start in four weeks and went 15 of 26 for 179 yards and a touchdown, but he was sacked six times and could not lead Arizona to a first down on its final four possessions -- including one in overtime.However, Anderson didn't have an interception after entering the game with seven, compared to four TDs, and the Cardinals feel he's made progress after losing his starting job to Max Hall.A more consistent running game would help take the pressure off Anderson. Last week, Arizona ran for just 53 yards on 21 attempts.Beanie Wells, second on the team in rushing, had minus-two yards on one carry after being limited in practice all week following an allergic reaction to a treatment for his knee injury. Wells is expected to be back at full strength Sunday.
While the Cardinals and Seahawks rank 30th and 31st, respectively, in total offense, Seattle totaled 302 yards in a 22-10 home win over Arizona on Oct. 24. Anderson did not start that game, but came in after Hall was injured and went 8 of 17 for 96 yards.The Cardinals have won four straight at home over Seattle, which last pulled off a season sweep of Arizona in 2005.
