Removing Skin Layers With Microdermabrasion Treatments

Microdermabrasion is a non surgical procedure for the mechanical removal of the outermost skin layer which comprises of dead skin cells

. Microdermabrasion treatments are used to reduce the appearance of acne scars, and as an anti wrinkle treatment. The procedure can be conducted on the face, chest, neck, back and hands.

How does the procedure work?

To remove the layer of dead skin cells a powerful device is used which blasts micro crystals of corundum powder, also known as aluminum dioxide on the surface of the skin. These particles are very tiny and hence do not cause any damage; however; the sand like material does spray away the dead skin cells on the epidermis. The treatment is not painful; however, some amount of discomfort may be felt around sensitive areas of the face such as the skin around the yes and the mouth. After the treatment, the particles are vacuumed away.

Different types of microdermabrasion treatments:

The procedure entails the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin; different products may be used to achieve results such as:

Microdermabrasion with crystals: In this type of procedure tiny crystals of aluminum dioxide are used to remove the dead skin cells; these crystals are sprayed across the skin; they help to take off the effects of sun damage, age spots, wrinkles and other skin problems. Even though this is an older microdermabrasion procedure it is still used in several clinics across the country

Microdermabrasion with diamonds: A diamond tipped head is used in this type of microdermabrasion procedure to remove the layer of dead skin cells. This is a fairly new procedure and is very famous across health spas and dermatological clinics across the country. However, you may have to go through a couple of sessions before you see conspicuous result with this procedure.

The cost:

Crystal microdermabrasion costs in the range of $150 to $200 per session; however, you will need to make a significantly higher upfront payment if you want to go for diamond microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion risks:

Like all other cosmetic procedures; there are some risks associated with microdermabrasion as well.

It is imperative that you educate yourself on the benefits and risks associated with the procedure; also, take some time out to talk to the person who will be performing the procedure; the expertise of the technician will make a big difference to the post procedure effect and in minimizing the risks associated with the procedure.

If you are pregnant or are breast feeding; microdermabrasion may not be an appropriate cosmetic procedure for you and you should wait till you have given birth to your child or till your child is old enough to stop breast feeding. Hormonal changes in the pre and post pregnancy period may reduce the efficacy of the procedure; the same also holds true in case of adolescents who would like to go in for microdermabrasion.

The benefits of microdermabrasion:

Contrary to popular belief, microdermabrasion is a quick, painless, effective and gentle cosmetic procedure that can take years off your face You skin will feel fresh and rejuvenated after the layer of dead skin cells have been removed.
