Prostate Cancer - Causes And Treatment

Prostate Cancer is one word that causes dread in the mind of the patient and his or her loved ones

. However, with the advances made by science, it is now possible to beat back the disease especially in the case of prostrate cancer where progression of the disease is quite slow. There are different choices of treatment of prostrate cancer based on the level of the disease and the physical condition of the patient. Here are some of the options that doctors might consider putting into action.

When it comes to prostate, the familiar adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is particularly apt. Although there is no way to guarantee that one will never be diagnosed with the disease, there are a handful of easy changes that a person can make in their lifestyle that will significantly lower their risk.

Maintaining a healthy weight has been shown to lower the chance of developing prostate cancer, as has adopting a diet that is low in fat. However, the most effective method of preventing prostate cancer has been proven to be getting the proper nutrients that the prostate needs through diet and nutritional supplements.

Prostate cancer causes are not fully able to be explained, but it appears that changes in the DNA of a prostate cell bring on the cancer. DNA is what makes up our genes, which in turn can control how individual cells behave under certain circumstances. We inherit DNA from our parents, and they from their ancestors. A very small percentage, around five to ten percent, it seems to be linked to these changes that are inherited.

It has also been shown to be possibly linked to certain hormones' high levels. Higher than average levels of the male hormone androgens has been shown to possibly play a part in the risk of contracting prostate cancer. Researchers have also noted that men who have a high level of a hormone known as IGF-1 are more likely to suffer from prostate cancer. But other scientists have not agreed with the finding of this link.

The most common symptom in the case of this cancer is the pain prevailing over the body. The pain increases immensely with increase in the size of the tumors. The bones even get weak by the tumors and may even lead to fracture, heavy sweating in night time and fever are also seen.

Pancreatic tumors are caused by damage to genes, but it is not known exactly why this damage happens. Evidence suggests that it is linked to exposure to carcinogens such as; cigarettes, food high in fat and protein and food additives. Possible predisposing factors are chronic pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus and chronic alcohol abuse.

There is some evidence that people who don't eat many fresh vegetables and fruits are more at risk from pancreatic cancer.also being overweight may cause a small increase in the risk. Some industrial chemicals called chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents have been linked to pancreatic cancer, although they are unlikely to be a major factor. Other chemicals and exposures that have been linked to an increased risk of pancreatic carcinoma in some studies include pesticides, radiation, nickel, chromium and iron.

Treatment for pancreatic cancer depends on the stage and location of the cancer as well as on your age, overall health and personal preferences. The first goal of treatment is to eliminate the cancer, when possible. When that isn't an option, the focus may be on preventing the pancreatic cancer from growing or causing more harm. This cancer is relatively resistant to medical treatment and the only potentially curative treatment is surgery. Radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer can palliate pain but does not affect the patients survival.

Gemcitabine was approved by the US FDA in 1998 after a clinical trial reported improvements in quality of life in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. Management of pain and other symptoms is an important part of the treatment of advanced cancer.
