Minimizing Scars From Breast Enhancement Surgery

Minimizing Scars From Breast Enhancement Surgery

All breast enhancement surgical procedures require incisions which can leave scars

, as is the case with any surgery. Due to different techniques now available for breast enhancement, an experienced surgeon can minimize the incisions so that scars are inconspicuous after healing. Scarring from enhancement surgery varies depending on the type of incision, the type of implant used, the patients body type and the surgeon's expertise.

There are several different locations that can be chosen for the implant incisions. The four areas usually used by surgeons are through the arm pit, around the nipple, under the breast and in the belly button. Surgeons use the armpit incision to push the implant to the breast with a small surgical camera called an endoscope. The incision is usually an inch long and hidden under the armpit, thereby hiding visible scarring. This gives a women confidence as there are no scars on the breast. An areola incision is made through a thin half-circle at the outer edge of the nipple's areola. This is minimally invasive and after healing, the scar is concealed by the dark coloring of the areola and is almost unnoticeable. Incisions placed under the breast are made at the fold where the breast joins the chest wall. It allows the surgeon greatest control over implant placement, and scars resulting from this incision are easily hidden beneath bathing suits and underwear. Breast enhancement through the belly button leaves no scars on the breasts and almost no visible scarring because of the incision location. Saline implants which are filled with gel only after insertion are usually used with this method, as pre-filled silicone implants are too large for this method.

The type of implant used for breast enhancement also affects the amount of scarring from the procedure. As saline implants are filled with gel only after the insertion of the implant, the incision required is small, usually 1-2 inches. The incision required for a silicone implant which is already filled with gel is larger, typically around 2-3 inches. However, larger implant sizes may require longer incisions.

Some women will have less visible scars than others based on their skin type, and ability to heal after the surgery. Scarring can be minimized or prevented by choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon and by following post-operative care instructions, such as massaging the scar and using sunscreen to protect the skin. Some doctors also recommend vitamin E, silicone gels and creams, and silicone sheeting to treat scarring from breast enhancement surgery. If a scar does not respond to this treatment, other scar-minimizing methods can be used, including collagen injections and scar removal surgery. Breast Implant incision scars may take from a few months to around a year to fade away completely.Minimizing Scars From Breast Enhancement Surgery

Depending on a woman's specific requirements for the breast augmentation procedure, scars can be reduced, based on placing the incision in areas that are less visible. With proper surgical techniques, scarring is usually minimal and is a small trade-off for an attractive breast enhancement.
