Knowing The Signs Of Oral Cancer

Oral Cancer is a type of head and neck tumor that affects the mouth

. It can form in the lining of the cheeks, gums, roof of the mouth, tongue, and lips.

Symptoms for the disease can often be the signs of other less serious illnesses. Because of this confusion, it is important to consult your doctor or dentist if you are experiencing any notable changes in your oral health.

During your annual dental check-up, your dentist should also screen for cancer. Those who use tobacco products may receive a more in-depth screening because of their increased risk.

Talk to your dentist if your see red or white patches in your mouth or on your lips. White or red patches inside the mouth or on the lips are the most common symptom of the disease.

These patches may be a combination of red and white, also. You may also see a sore or blister in your mouth.

A sore or blister in the mouth or on the lip that will not heal is a symptom of the disease. Sores that last longer than two weeks warrant a trip to the doctor for a screening.

If you have difficulty swallowing, chewing, moving the jaw, speaking, or moving the tongue you should see your doctor. This is a non-specific symptom of cancer and can be caused by many other conditions.

Frequent or persistent earaches need to be evaluated by a physician. An earache is usually indicative of an infection, but in some cases, it can be a symptom of oral cancer.

Another sign is if you notice a change in the way your teeth fit together. This can include dentures not fitting correctly.

Oral cancer can also cause loose teeth which would affect your bite. Report any oral bleeding to your dentist and doctor.

Bleeding from the mouth can be caused by many things, but it is still a symptom of the disease and needs to be checked out. This serious dental disease which pertains to the mouth, lips or throat is often highly curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages.

Tobacco use is the number one risk factor in oral cancer. Studies have shown that at least 75 percent of those diagnosed were either current or former tobacco users.

Heavy use of alcohol among tobacco users has been proven to have a 15 percent greater risk of developing the disease than tobacco users that are not heavy alcohol users. Age and prolonged exposure to radiation or sunlight are contributing factors as well.

Unfortunately, in its early stages, oral tumors can go unnoticed. The disease could look like a common ulcer, cold sore, or a discoloration of tissue.

Fortunately, your dentist can see or feel if a lesion looks cancerous. If you have any type of lesion in your mouth, or on your lips, that does not heal within two weeks, or a difficulty in swallowing for a prolonged period of time, it is very important to see your dentist right away.

If your dentist does find a suspicious lesion in your mouth, he or she might remove it. It is more likely, however, that they will send you to a specialist for a removal and biopsy, which is a painless procedure.

If the disease is detected early enough, it could possibly be treated with surgery alone. Radiation combined with surgery would likely be used if the tumor is in its advanced stages.

The best preventions of the disease are not to use tobacco of any kind and only drink alcohol in moderation. Avoid prolonged exposure to sun or use a sunscreen on your lips.

Visit your dentist every six months for regular check-ups. When your dentist examines your mouth at your routine check-up appointments, he or she should also screen you for any tumors.

This process only takes about 90 seconds and consists of a visual examination for any presence of cancer. Prevention is a key factor in oral cancer and a simple dental examination could save your life.
