, "It"s not your father"s Oldsmobile." The idea was to convince younger car buyers that the Oldsmobile auto was fresh, new, and exciting; something different than their parents" brand of auto. The fact is that very little in the auto industry is the same as when our parents were our age. Technology has changed production, advertising, design, and even insurance.For our parents and our grandparents" generation, it was not uncommon for a couple to live in the same house in the same neighborhood all of their lives. Many people worked for the same company for 25, 30, even 40 years. And, once that first insurance policy was bought, folks stayed with the same insurance agent for their auto, homeowners, and life insurance for as long as they needed coverage. The insurance agent would send them a card during the holidays and when it was time to renew their policy, they"d send the agent the yearly premium. Every five years or so, they might sit down with the agent to look over the policy to see if any changes needed to be made. But other than that, auto insurance was more or less not something that was worried over too much.
With the advent of the Internet, however, much has changed in our world. Among those changes is how we purchase our auto insurance policies. It"s definitely not your father"s (or your mother"s) auto insurance. Whereas before people would stay with the same carrier and pretty much the same policy year in and year out, partly because it was easier than calling various agents or going to their offices to discuss insurance, online shopping now makes it extremely easy to comparison shop and to get quotes on your auto insurance almost instantaneously. It may be that even after comparison shopping, you decide to remain with your current policy. But online comparison gives you the opportunity to know rather than to guess that you are getting the best rates possible.
Some people worry that purchasing auto insurance online will lead to an impersonal experience where they do not get the attention and level of customer service that they desire. However, most online companies have a fully staffed customer service department that is available to answer questions either online or via telephone. Although it"s true that you will probably not receive a card from your agent during the holidays, most modern online shoppers are much more concerned with getting the best auto policy available at the cheapest prices than they are with developing an ongoing relationship with their provider.
