Graduation season is quickly approaching, but what should be a time of pride and
happiness has turned into a worry-filled time, with many graduates-to-be feeling anxious about finding suitable employment in their field of choice. An effective way of getting ones foot in the door is to seek out internships or volunteer positions, gaining hands-on experience and building up a professional network of contacts.
While internships associated with colleges and universities tend to be formally organized to coincide with the school year, there are also places that offer more informal internships. Start by calling your alma mater to see if they have any programs that can point you in the right direction. Likewise, alumni groups and associations may have social networking sites wherein you can seek advice or get suggestions. Check out professional networking sites like LinkedIn and lastly, go old school and call local employers to offer your services.
The downside of most internships is that they do not pay. But the time and effort invested can pay big dividends later.
