How To Find A Missing Life Insurance Policy

How To Find A Missing Life Insurance Policy

It's a problem that's more common than you'd think

. A relative or loved one dies, and you can't find the life insurance policy. To make matter worse, you don't remember the company the policy was through. Luckily, if you find yourself in this situation, there are a few things you can do.

The first thing you should do is look for evidence of payment to the insurance company. If your loved one paid their life insurance premiums with checks, there be entries in their checkbook registry that indicates the name of the company the checks were sent to. Failing to find this, you may be able to contact your bank to get their canceled checks. If they used online banking and you have the username and password, you may be able to look back and see what company they were paying their premiums to. You may even luck out and find out the bank is their insurer. Some banks sell policies to customers who use their bank for checking and savings. Another place to check is with your loved one's credit card company. Some people pay their premiums with their credit cards, so you may be able to check past credit card statements for the life insurance company's name.

It is not uncommon for a person to get their life insurance through their place of employment, so your loved one's last employer may be a good place to check. If that fails, check with other companies your loved one has worked for. It's not uncommon for a person to keep their life insurance policy even after they leave a company. At the very least, the former employers should be able to give you the name of their insurer so you can contact them to inquire about a policy.

If the above tried and true methods fail, there are a couple more options, including websites and services that will help you locate a lost policy for a fee. They will take your loved one's information and check with a number of insurance companies for you. If they don't turn anything up, you may have to wait for money to show up in your state's "unclaimed property" database. If the insurance company knows the policy holder has died and the money isn't claimed in a certain amount of time, the insurance company will turn the money over to the state. This unclaimed money goes into a database, where it can be claimed by the rightful heirs. If you think the policy may have been handed over to the state, contact your state department for the exact method to search for and claim it.
