How to React to Your Child's Challenging Behaviour - 2 Basic Guidelines

Quite often, when a parent sees that their child is getting out of hand and really misbehaving, they will instinctively smack the child or use some other form of aggression in order to discipline the child. Much of the research on this subject has confirmed that spanking a child, teaches him/her to use acts of aggression and violence to solve their own problems in the future. An additional effect that spanking has on children, is that these children are more liable to have a low self-esteem when they will be adults. So, what should you as a responsible parent do instead? Here are two guidelines to implement when reacting to children's challenging behaviour.

1. Ensure you stay calm

First and most importantly, if you feel out of control and angry at your child, try to calm down. In that quiet moment you will often find a solution to the problem. Even if you can't leave the room physically, you can still take a step back mentally, count to five in your head and only then address the issue. Parents who are under stress and don't have any time to themselves, are more prone to use an aggressive method when disciplining their children. So, it is really important for parents to ensure they take some time for themselves to relax.

2. Make sure they feel loved

When a child misbehaves, it is crucial that they still feel that they are loved and cherished. They definitely will not feel loved if they are continuously smacked. As a parent, you want to make sure you are kind to them yet firm. Try to get down on your child's level, make eye contact, and gently tell him, in a kind but firm manner, that his behaviour is unacceptable.

Remember, being aggressive with our children will result in perpetuating violence. It will also affect our children's self-esteem, and cause them to be rebellious and uncooperative. We have to react to our children in a responsible manner, for much of their future lies in our hands.
