How To Get A Motorcycle License In Pennsylvania

How To Get A Motorcycle License In Pennsylvania

If you're from the state of Pennsylvania and want to ride your motorcycle on city streets

, country back roads, major highways, or any other roadway in the state for that matter, then you're going to have to get a motorcycle license. If you're a new rider and are not sure how to go about doing so, this information will certainly help.

Get Your Learner Permit First

Before you can get your Class M license you first need to apply for a motorcycle permit which allows you to ride your motorcycle legally while you prepare for the rider course or the skills test. In order to get the permit you must complete a DL-5 application, pay a $10 fee, and then take a vision screening test. If you successfully pass the knowledge test and the vision screening, you will get your permit which is good for 1 year. Be sure to grab a copy of the Pennsylvania operator manual while you're at it. This manual is a great resource that you can use to learn about riding your Motorcycle in Pennsylvania.

Understand The Permit Restrictions

Before you hop on you motorcycle and take off after getting your learner permit, there are some restrictions that you should know about. Riders who hold a motorcycle permit are not allowed to ride after dark unless they hold a regular driver license and are accompanied by another rider who has a Class M motorcycle. Permit holders are also prohibited from carrying passengers while they ride. The only time someone holding a permit can have a passenger is if the passenger is a certified instructor.

Your Options For Getting A License

You have a couple of options when it comes to the route you want to take in order to get your Class M license. You can go take a Motorcycle Safety Course, or you can schedule a skills test at a local licensing center with a certified instructor.

1. Motorcycle Safety Course

The safety course offers valuable motorcycle training that will help you become a better rider overall. During the course you will learn about many different topics including rider safety, proper handling techniques, and will also learn how to properly identify roadway hazards that might exist in different riding situations. Upon successful completion of a knowledge test at the end of the course, you will be given a completion certificate that also waives the need for a skills test.

2. Knowledge and Skills Tests

If you'd rather not take a safety course, you can opt to go straight for the skills test in order to get your Class M license more quickly. You can schedule your skills test through a local testing center at any time.
