How To Control Unruly Children

How To Control Unruly Children

Parenting can be a handful at times. It is not uncommon for parents to feel overwhelmed or frustrated by misbehaving children. Proper discipline is a huge step towards reinforcing appropriate behaviour and a strong relationship between parent and child. This article will highlight just a few techniques you can use to help control unruly children:

-Learn how to understand your child

Young children are usually very predictable. As a parent you will find out your children's habits. You will find out that you can usually foretell impending misbehaviour from a child from their reactions and various other behavioural markers. Knowing the warning signs to a temper tantrum means you are able to prevent misbehaviour before it has chance to start. Remember; be aware of how your child acts in certain situations, around others, at school, and you will most likely be able to predict if there is an impending tantrum.

-Avoid getting angry

Parents are, after all, just human beings. Like everyone else parents have bad days and will lose their temper. Young children will often know exactly which buttons to press to make mums and dads angry or frustrated. If you feel like you are losing your cool, drop what you are doing and leave for a while, step outside for a breath of fresh air, cool off. Losing your temper with your child could lead to further confrontation and negative feelings for both of you.

-Respect your children

Everybody is learning, it is a constant process, even parents learn new things. Children are constantly learning lessons from everyday life, from what they see others doing. If you want your child to grow up to treat you and others with respect, then you need to show them exactly what respect is and how they should respect other people. Setting an example by treating others with respect in front of your children and treating you children with respect is a huge step in setting concrete foundations for positive behaviour. A child that is brought up without being given respect will most likely become an adult that shows very little respect for others and themselves.

Raising children can be tough. Mothers and fathers often feel that they are doing something wrong, or that they are the worst parent possible. Don't be hard on yourself, relax; the fact that your child is acting up is not necessarily due to you being a bad parent.
