The sign boards are becoming blurry. Your eyes water frequently. You reluctantly decide that it is time for your eyes to be seen by an eye doctor. But whom do you go to? How do you start? Who can be trusted with your eyes?
Where do you start looking for a good eye doctor?
a.Ask your family physician: For eg, if you are a resident of Navi Mumbai, your family doctor would know the best eye specialists in Navi Mumbai or the best eye hospital in Navi Mumbai. He would also be able to help you choose which specialty you need to consult: retina / cornea/ cataract/ glaucoma/ Oculoplasty etc.
b.Ask your friends / family / colleagues: Chances are high that at least one of them has recently visited an eye doctor and would be able to give you their feedback on the services received.
What should you consider when you select an eye specialist?
a.What type of eye specialist is he / she?
Optometrist: Optometrists are trained to examine the internal and external structure of the eyes. The optometrist is trained to diagnose conditions such as near sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, glaucoma, retinal detachment and cataracts.They also test a person's ability to focus and coordinate the eyes and see depth and colours accurately. Optometrists do not perform eye surgery.
Optician:Opticians are eye healthcare professionals who assist optometrists and ophthalmologists in providing complete patient care by interpreting eye prescriptions; determiningwhich lenses best meet your needs, ordering eye-related products; dispensing, repairing,adjusting,replacing, and reproducing previously ordered contact lenses, eyeglasses, and frames.
Ophthalmologist: Ophthalmologists are eye doctors who specialize in medical as well as surgical eye care. An ophthalmologist is qualified to deliver total eye care, meaning eye examinations, diagnosis and treatment of disease, medical and surgical eye care, and visual complications due to other diseases, like diabetes.
b.Is your eye specialist well qualified?
A well-qualified eye specialist is an encouraging sign that your eyes are in safe hands. An optometrist or ophthalmologist who has more experience will be better able to detect and diagnose eye diseases simply because they have seen more patients. It"s not called practice for no reason!
c.What specialty does your eye doctor belong to?
While some eye doctors are specialised to treat kids" eye troubles, others are specialised to treat specialised regions of the eye like retina / cornea, etc. while some others are specialised in certain diseases like glaucoma / cataract etc. Find out what your eye doctors" specialty is and whether it is suited to your condition.
