How Smoking Affects Your Insurance

Smoking not only predisposes you to a spectrum of health problems

, it may also contribute to more expenses such as an increase rate of more insurance premiums. Insurers take smoking seriously that premiums for smokers could get to a third more the usual. This is because smokers are more susceptible to serious illnesses and even death and will likely claim their insurance policies. This should not be perceived as a punishment though. Rather, it should be taken as a motivation and extra push to quit and strive to healthy.

Dangers of Smoking

Nicotine is the main component of cigarettes that causes many harmful effects and that is addictive at the same time. It makes smoking deadly and yet common especially among teenagers and adults. It enters the body through the lungs, nicotine cause many changes such as increased heart and breathing rate and more blood sugar released into the blood. It also increases certain chemicals in the brain that is responsible for the pleasure sensation, thus making it addictive.

Other than nicotine, cigarette smoke also contains potentially lethal or health damaging chemicals. Two of the most dangerous chemical components are tar and carbon monoxide. Tar is the chemical in cigarettes that contributes to lung cancer and many other lung diseases. On the other hand, carbon monoxide can cause or increase the risk of heart diseases. All these can lead to serious illnesses and even death.

Long time smokers will also notice an altered sense of taste and smell. They may even have a reduced stamina for physical activities such as exercise and sports. They will also notice that their skin ages faster and their teeth become discolored.

Quitting Smoking and Insurance

If you have quit smoking, it will not automatically be reflected on your premiums. You will need to be smoke free for a year before you will be declared a non-smoker. This is because even if you have stopped smoking, traces of nicotine and other cigarette chemicals will still be in your system and will take some time to be flushed out. One year after you quit smoking, you can go back to your insurer to declare that you are a non-smoker and apply for a lower premium. You insurer will conduct a nicotine test for verification purposes. They may also require verification from your family doctor. After which, you will have a good chance to have reduced premiums on your life insurance.
