Holidaying in and around Malaga Costa del Sol

When on your COSTA DEL SOL HOLIDAY RENTALS visiting Malaga has to be one of the top towns to visit. A one-time fishing village changed to a top jet setters resort, since the early 50s when actors and actresses of the time would come here for their holidays. To make a whole day out take a trip to Torremolinos, a small town just west of Malaga and one of many picturesque villages along the coast of the Costa del Sol. At least it was until the 1950s: Torremolinos was the first on the Costa del Sol to take advantage of the sudden influx of tourists as they flocked to the sun. It still has the charm of its early days although there are a few high rise apartments; the tower "Torre de los Molinos" from where the town took its name, still stands in the centre. The town is a favourite of British tourists who return year after year.

If the intention is just to enjoy the beaches then no fear there then; take a walk along the front as it's possible to walk all the way along to Benalmadena. In between is La Carihuela, which is certainly a lot quieter as less tourists head here. Perhaps because it is smaller, tourists often stay where they are with very little in the way of exploration, especially if they have found a place they particularly like. La Carihuela though is a Spanish village however, catering for tourists that like traditional British bars, even fish and chips. If the chance comes to rent an apartment here, try to get up early to catch the fishermen landing their daily catch on the beach. The 16th July is the festival of Carmen, when the saint is removed from the local church and taken out onto the water for blessing the fishing boats, followed by sumptuous celebrating and drinking.

Of course, there are many places to visit while here; highly recommended is the Kelipe Centro de Arte Flamenco in Malaga. The flamenco style of music and dance is native to the south of Spain and there are plenty of bars and shows demonstrating the routines based on its origins among the Romani, Byzantine, Sephardic Jews and Moors. Although its roots are firmly in Andalucia, the flamenco demonstrated at the Kelipe Centre is the nearest anyone can get to what can be termed as "real", as opposed to most of the show's shown elsewhere. Head to the Galeria Goya, close to the Plaza de la Constitution, and for 15 Euros get a drink and amazing one-hour show. It's not the usual gaudy touristic venue but a shopping mall closed for the evening's event; it's usually wise to get there early for the seats as it is like an intimate gathering - too late and you may miss out on any available seating. Usually the show has the one guitarist and a solitary dancer on a small stage without any other sound equipment. Need it be stressed this is not the typical touristic show: this is the intimate, passionate expression of "flamenco puro", a show definitely not to be missed. It's highly recommended by the Malaga tourist office; if you are there early enough then have a meal at the Galeria, one of the oldest bars in Malaga, also serves tapas for one fantastic day while on your COSTA DEL SOL HOLIDAY RENTALS.
