Historical Crime Fiction Is A Trip In Time

Historical Crime Fiction Is A Trip In Time

Sherlock Holmes may be the character that pops in to your mind when you think of historical crime fiction

. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle delivered him to readers for the first time in 1887. Conan Doyle, an author and physician created the genius crime-solver Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Watson worked at his side throughout each novel and story. They waded through numerous mysterious murders up until the final case, published in 1914.

He was a detective who worked as a consultant for the police station in England named Scotland Yard. There were fifty-six short stories written. There were four full-length novels penned about this character as well. Conan Doyle said he based the character on a Dr. Joseph Bell who he considered to be an introspective genius. Conan Doyle had been his clerk at an Edinburgh Royal Infirmary during one period in his life.

Previous to Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allan Poe wrote three historical crime fiction stories in the 1840s. The Dupin stories may not be as well known, however, they were considered the first in the genre. Poe, as you may recall, wrote the famous poem, "The Raven." He is also famous for his tales of Gothic horror such as "The Tell Tale Heart."

The character, C. Auguste Dupin, is called the first fictional detective ever put into a story. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" that Dupin made his debut in, is referred to as the first detective story. Poe continued the protagonist Dupin in "The Mystery of Marie Roget." His run ended with "The Purloined Letter." In the third one, Dupin prevents a blackmail plot.Historical Crime Fiction Is A Trip In Time

Since ancient times, men have been plotting murder against one another. Brutus killed Caesar in ancient Rome. No detectives stepped in to solve the case. It was simply a case of the politicians cleverly concocting a cover-up story. How little some things have changed.

In the story of "The Arabian Nights, Scheherazade told a story of "Three Apples" to Shahryar after their wedding night. It began with the discovery of the body of a young woman found cut up and hidden in a trunk. Shahryar gave the order to Ja'far that he must solve the crime in three days or be executed as punishment. This suspense was a precursor to the later murder mysteries. Ja'far had the preservation of his own life as motivation to solve the crime.

The reader of historical crime fiction should be taken on a journey back through time. He should feel the essence of Scotland Yard in England during the era Sherlock Holmes lived and worked in. He will share the desperation of the young Scheherazad as she struggles to invent new stories to prevent Shahryar from having her beheaded. Remember his habit of marrying a virgin one day and having her beheaded the next? When one reads an historical novel, one should be drawn into the scene and feel how those people experienced life. One should have a sense of anticipation until the protagonist solves the murder and brings the story to its conclusion.
