Help Your Dog Fight Summertime Pests

In many parts of the country fleas and ticks are a serious problem for pet owners

. In the warm wet summer months these parasites can become very prolific while feeding off of your animals. That's right, it may sound quite gross, but these little bugs attached to your dogs and cats for the purpose of sucking their blood.

Not only are they quite annoying to the animals, if the fleas are brought into the home they can begin multiplying inside. It can be quite difficult to eradicate these pests from your house. It's far better to prevent your dogs from being infested with these insects in the first place. There are a number of products on the market which are quite reliable in preventing any flea and tick problems for your pets during the summer months.

In times past flea and tick collars were very common and were used somewhat effectively to control the problem. However, nowadays most veterinarians suggest a topical liquid is applied directly to the dog's skin. Although the amount applies is extremely small, the flea and tick medicine is quite effective in not only removing attached ticks and fleas that the dog already has but it's also quite reliable in preventing any more problems for the canine in the coming month or two.

Normally, even in heavily infested areas where fleas and ticks are prevalent, this highly effective treatment for the pests only needs to be applied three or four times per summer at the most. In many cases, only two or three applications are required for total control of the parasites during the entire summer.

Always consult with your veterinarian before using these products on your older pets. Old dogs and cats may be more susceptible to reactions from the strong medicine which soaks into their skin. It's advisable when first giving your animals their dose to split the dose into two applications at least several hours apart so that if there are any reactions you can observe them with out giving the animal the entire dose.

Your veterinarian normally has in stock these flea and tick medicines. You can also check online for Internet based retailers who stock pet supplies. Oftentimes their prices are somewhat lower than those found at local vet offices. Of course always check before ordering about shipping charges is that could add to the price and thus make your veterinarian the better choice for purchasing the products.
