Greywater Treatment

Greywater is that component of sewage which does not come from a toilet or urinal

. Greywater is the wastewater which is generated from the use of a shower, bath tub, spa bath, hand basin,

laundry tub, clothes washing machine, kitchen sink, and dishwasher. A DGTS is designed totreat and disinfect greywater or components of greywater so that it may be applied to a surface or

sub-surface irrigation area, and / or reused for toilet flushing and laundry use in the household.

What is Greywater Treatment?

Greywater includes all household wastewater except toilet waste. It can be a valuable water resource, and an increasing number of householders are recycling greywater for a variety of

purposes. However, care must be taken with this practice as it can carry health and environmental risks.

Recycling greywater

Greywater can be used untreated, or it can be treated to varying degrees to reduce nutrients and disease-causing microorganisms. The appropriate uses of greywater depend on both the source of

greywater and the level of treatment, and are listed in the table overleaf. The potential health risks associated with greywater recycling when it has been sourced from a multi-dwelling or

commercial premises are considered potentially greater than those associated with greywater recycling within single domestic premises.

Greywater Treatment recycling must always occur in a safe and controlled manner.

Untreated greywater

Recycling untreated greywater is not subject to specific legislative control in Victoria, and it can be temporarily diverted from the house for garden watering (for example during dry summer periods).

However, the guidance provided in the EPA brochure Greywater Reuse should be followed to minimise the health and environmental risks associated with this practice.

Untreated greywater must not be stored for periods longer than 24 hours as it will become septic, and it is not recommended that untreated greywater is used for any purpose within the home.

Treated greywater The EPA must approve greywater treatment systems that are designed to treat up to 5000 litres per day, before a local council permit can be issued for their installation. The EPA approval

specifies monitoring and maintenance requirements, and the approved forms of dispersal of treated water to the environment. Different levels of treatment can be achieved with these systems,

depending on the technology. More information on greywater treatment systems can be obtained from the EPA.

Why use Greywater Treatment?

It's a waste to irrigate with great quantities of drinking water when plants thrive on used water containing small bits of compost. Unlike a lot of ecological stopgap measures, grey water reuse is a part of the fundamental solution to many ecological problems and will probably remain essentially unchanged in the distant future. The benefits of grey water recycling include:

Lower fresh water use

Less strain on failing septic tank or treatment plant

Better treatment (topsoil is many times more effective than subsoil or treatment plant)

Less energy and chemical use

Groundwater recharge

Plant growth

Reclamation of otherwise wasted nutrients

Increased awareness of and sensitivity to natural cycles

Why does greywater matter?

Viewed narrowly, greywater systems dont look that important. A low flow showerhead can save water with less effort. A septic system can treat greywater almost as well.

But when you look at the whole picturehow everything connectsthe keystone importance of greywater is revealed.

Ecological systems design is about context, and integration between systems. The entirety of integrated, ecological design can be reduced to one sentence: do what's appropriate for the context.

Ecological systemsrainwater harvesting, runoff management, passive solar, composting toilets, edible landscapingall of these are more context sensitive than their counterparts in conventional practice; that's most of what makes them more ecological.

Greywater systems are more context sensitive than any other manmade ecological system, and more connected to more other systems.

Get the greywater just right, and youve got the whole package rightand that matters.

Many people and organizations instinctively recognize that greywater is the ideal test case for the transition to a new way of regulating and building that is appropriate to a post-peak resource, mature civilization.

The US Green Building Council, the City of Santa Barbara, CA, Oregon ReCode, and SLO Green Build are among those organizations which independently chose greywater standards as the technology with which to launch their programs of regulatory reform.

Is greywater reuse safe?

Yes. There are eight million greywater systems in the US with 22 million users. In 60 years, there has been one billion system user-years of exposure, yet there has not been one documented case of greywater transmitted illness.
