Do you wake up frequently during the night or you just cant get to sleep

First of all, its important to get to the root of the insomnia. If you have trouble falling asleep, go through the same ritual every night to prepare your brain to rest. Stop watching television or using any computers or screens at least an hour before going to bed. This helps your brain get ready to sleep. Spend quality time with the family or do a little cleanup or preparation for the next day. This is another way to reduce stress that can cause insomnia.

Stress can wreak havoc on sleep. Waking in the middle of night only to start thinking about work or a problem can cause hours of lost sleep. This lack of sleep affects the whole day making many unproductive and just plain cranky. If you are under stress from work or commitments, sit down and decide what can be done. Can you lessen your burden? Can you reduce commitments? If you have a family, can they pitch in more around the house?

Morning exercise can also play a role in sleep. Doctors do warn that late exercise may interfere with sleep and warm up the body to much to feel comfortable. Cutting caffeine intake can also be the path to a good nights rest. Start by not having anything caffeinated four to five hours before bedtime.

Lifestyle changes aside, there are a number of herbs and supplements thought to help aid sleep. One popular herb is chamomile. It can be found in tea form, but also in capsules and has a relaxing effect. Another supplement is melatonin. It helps to regulate the sleep wake cycle and some use it to help ease jetlag as well. Valerian is a time tested herb that can be helpful as a sedative or anti-anxiety treatment. 5-HTP is also quite popular. I must admit that I start feeling sleepy quite quickly after taking it. It almost mimics the sleepy feeling you get after a big meal. Lastly, magnesium is very calming and an excellent way to settle down before bedtime.

While there are many lifestyle changes that can be made such as increasing exercise, reducing caffeine intake and reducing stress, there are also a number of natural supplements available to those with insomnia.
