Finding A Job: Make Your Own Rules

Finding A Job: Make Your Own Rules

Looking for a job can be a long, frustrating and sometimes scary process

. You may feel frustrated about the lack of current opportunities. Even if you haven't secured a job yet, the hunt doesn't have to be an unpleasant experience. An inspired attitude could be just the thing you're missing in your quest for a job.

The job hunt process is very familiar. You read want ads then mail a resume and hope to get an interview. After you interview, the decision is usually out of your hands. When searching for a job, consider that these "rules" could be meant to be broken. Here are some ideas to consider that may just put you a step ahead of other competitors in the job market.

Don't react, create. Everyone knows to look at ads and "help wanted" posters to find a job. Try contacting businesses even if you're not sure that they need a position filled. This gives you a chance to inquire about positions that may have just opened and to just tell them who you are. Being familiar with particular business practice is also a good idea because it allows you to offer specific ways you can help the company.

Your qualifications are always an asset. Job-seekers are too often scared away from jobs because they don't have every prerequisite in an ad. If you have experience at a task, for example, then lacking a few sought-after characteristics isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you don't meet all specifications, you still shouldn't be too discouraged to apply. For one thing, all companies will teach you their particular way of doing things. Just like the company tells you what it wants, you can tell employers what you have that they may need.

Try traditional strategies in new ways. Looking for a job using proven methods can be successful, but it doesn't have to be the only way. Looking on the Internet is key to finding a job in many professions. Creating a unique website is an example of a way to let your name and qualifications be seen.

Finding a job isn't a one-size-fits-all process. The most important thing to remember is to make the process work for you no matter what that may be. Being proactive and thinking outside the box are two methods that can help you land a prized job.
