It might be because of their color, it might be because of their cute antics and it might be because of their numbers. Regardless of the reason, finches are very popular species of birds to keep as pets. Practically in every country in the world, you'll find that these species of birds are largely available and if you love animals, birds in particular, you have all the opportunity to purchase a pair and keep them as companions at home.

Basically, there is a long list of finch varieties you have to go through to select which one would be best for you. You can pick a pair based solely on color and you'll have wide array to choose from. There are Gold finch, the Purple finch, the Saffron finch and the Ride Bow Firetail finch.

If you're fond of black and white, a Zebra finch would be an interestingly colored bird. You also can choose from the Parrot finch, the Gouldian finch and the Spice finch. Aside from their brilliant colors and soothing chirping, another perk with keeping finches as pets is that they are not too difficult to maintain. They are perfectly suited for the home setting and there are only a few things you need to remember in keeping your pet finches healthy and happy.

With bird food, finch seed is an everyday staple for your birds. You can even purchase seed mixes. A teaspoon of bird seed a day will be enough. However, you can treat your finches with slices of apple, orange or melon. You can also feed your bird leafy greens like lettuce and spinach.

A further note on nutrition, you might like to give your pet finches some supplements. Protein and calcium are basic nutrients to keep your birds healthy. You can give the right amount of protein to your bird by feeding them egg food. You can also feed your bird whole wheat bread soaked in milk.

Cuttlebone, on the other hand is a great calcium supplement for your pet finches and it will give them a strong firm beak and it prevents the health condition in female gouldian finches known as egg binding.

It's a given that finches need water every day. Supply your birds with fresh water, a dish for drinking and one for bathing. Once to twice a week is an ample amount of time for putting a dish of water in your bird's cage for them to have a bath.

With grooming, you need to trim your finch' nails regularly. Watch out for the main vein when you're clipping their nails.

As for housing, a cage the size of 12 inches x 18 inches x 12 inches is the minimum size. Rectangular cages are better than round ones. You also need perches for your finches in their cage. Having finches around gives you the chance to be with a beautiful and wonderful companion at home.
