At this time GP is offered as robust ERP and MRP solution to mid-market companies

where large corporations could get different application Dynamics AX or formerly known as Axapta. In the past situation was different and Great Plains Software were pushing this application to all the niches in United States and internationally. If you were small company then Small Business Financials was for you (scaled down version of GP). And if you were large corporation then there was eEnterprise. Having these ambitious plans GPS introduced Dexterity architecture which is in essence shell coded in C programming language. In Dex you can do all kinds of customizations, integration and reporting. And the author of this article was fulltime Dexterity software developer back in late 1990th and earlier 2000th. But Microsoft acquired Great Plains Software in 1999 and then Navision Software (Denmark based ERP software development company) and ended up owning several (and to some extend competing) packages: Great Plains, Solomon, Navision and Axapta. Since then the directions are toward specializations. Microsoft Dynamics GP was oriented to mid-market niche here in the United States, Canada and other English speaking countries and Spanish speaking Latin America. Why we are restating these historical events? Because we are trying to communicate to you that Dexterity programming might be too complex for your local provider specializing in mid-market ERP implementations. So what else is available to do the job?

1.Modifier with VBA. This tool is traditional and it could not be categorized as something completely compliant with .Net platform. It is modified version of Dexterity where you have to use VBA scripts to animate the fields placed on core GP forms. It is possible to use Dexterity sanscript in VBA scripts but since debugging is not available the technique is too complex and prone to problems with future version updates. Modifier is good tool when you project scope is modest

2.eConnect Software Development Kit. It was introduced in earlier 2000th as the instrument for ecommerce programmers to integrate shopping cart in the form of Sales Order Processing order or invoice. The background technology is the set of encrypted SQL Stored procedures. Later one this SDK was expanded and currently covers the majority of modules. This tool makes Dexterity no longer required in the case of integration interface programming. We recommend it if you have in-house Microsoft Visual Studio software developers

3.Visual Studio Tools. Here you can do interface modification directly in VS rather than in Dex. However you still have to appeal to Dexterity in order to create new tables as they should be registered in custom dictionary and in Dynamics.set initialization file

4.Web Services. If you plan to query GP database through the web then review Web Services for Dynamics GP. If you expect to feed records to GP via web services then likely you have to create WS in Visual Studio programming VB or C#

5.Integration Manager. Here you can program custom integration where logic is altered in fields and events driven VBA scripts. This tool is popular in initial data migrations to GP. But it could be successfully deployed in ongoing data feeding scenarios as well

6.Extender. This is the application programmed in Dexterity and enabling you to add forms and interfaces without programming in Sanscript. If you still need to animate your newly created forms then you need Extender Enterprise (available from eOne Australia). With Enterprise version you can add Sanscript codes (debugger is not available however)
