Divorce from the Children's Point of View

Do you know someone whose parents are divorced? Are your parents divorced? Answered yes to one or maybe both? Don't worry, you are not alone!

A divorce occurs after a husband and wife decide that they can't stand living with each other under the same roof. In short, they no longer want to be married to each other. They agree to sign legal papers that will make them single again, thus allowing them to remarry if they want to.Divorce from the Children's Point of View

Deciding to divorce is not that simple and easy. In the beginning, the spouses spend a long time trying to solve their problems. But sometimes, the spouses can't fix these problems anymore. This is the time that divorce seems to be only and best solution.

Sometimes, both parents want to divorce. Sometimes, one wants to and the other doesn't. But even if only one wants it more than the other, both spouses agree that that the marriage can no longer last.

There are many reasons why people divorce. Maybe they have just grown apart. Maybe the love they once had for each other has changed over the years. Maybe all they can do is fight and just can't agree about things. Every couple has their own reasons for divorce. Whatever the reasons are, one thing is for sure:the kids are not involved with this.

For most cases, the only ones who won't want the divorce are the children. Some kids have mixed feelings about it, especially if they know their parents weren't happy together. Some may even feel relieved when their parents finally divorce, especially if there's been a lot of fighting.

It's important for kids to know that just because their parents divorce each other, they are NOT divorcing their kids. The first thought they might have is that the divorce would mean that their parents might leave them too.

Although it's true that the children of a divorced couple usually lives with only one parent most of the time, the parent who lives somewhere else is still that kid's mom or dad forever. No legal paper can change that.

There are also cases wherein the children of divorced parents believe they are the reason their parents got divorced. They might think that they have done something wrong to trigger the divorce. If only they behaved better, gotten better grades, or helped more around the house, the divorce would not have happened. But this isn't true! Divorce is strictly between the husband and wife ONLY.

Even if you heard your parents argue about you once, this doesn't cause a husband and wife to end their marriage. The fact that your parents can no longer stay married is not your fault.

Just like the divorce is not the children's fault, getting parents back together is not up to them, either. Although plenty of kids wish for it and even try things they think might work, most likely, it doesn't happen. You can try to do better at home or at school to make your mom and dad happy with you, but not enough or even near to get them back together.

The opposite is also true. Getting in trouble so your mom and dad will have to get together to talk about you is not going to make the divorce go away, either. But if you are the responsible kid that wants to make a stand, all you have to do is just be yourself and try totalkto your parents about any feelings you have.
