Denver Breast Surgery

Augmentation mammoplasty is perhaps the most frequently preformed

, and well-known, procedure done by Denver breast surgery physicians. Usually, women undergo an augmentation to increase their breast size or create visual symmetry between breasts of unequal size. In order to perform an augmentation, the surgeon will insert a bag in front of, or behind, the breast muscle. The physician will inject the bags with a saline or silicone filler.

Another common procedure done by breast surgery Denver physicians is a reduction mammoplasty. Just like an augmentation, a reduction can be performed on both breasts or only one breast. During the procedure, the surgeon will remove breast tissue. Then, he will tighten the skin over the breast tissue that remains. In some cases, excessive skin will also be removed.

Breast surgeons can also perform a breast lift, or mastopexy. Women who have a genetic predisposition to sagging breasts, or those who have sagging breasts due to childbirth, may opt for a mastopexy. In order to lift the breasts, the physician will cut the skin located at the top of each breast. The skin will be lifted upwards. Finally, the surgeon will reattach the skin. Sometimes, the nipples and areolas must be raised in order to create a natural look.

Women who suffer from a medical condition, such as breast cancer, may need to have a mastectomy. During a mastectomy, one or both breasts must be completely removed, referred to as a single mastectomy or double mastectomy respectively. Mastectomy patients usually have the option of undergoing breast reconstruction surgery.

During reconstruction surgery, the surgeon will insert implants at the site where the breasts were once located. In many cases, the surgeon will have to graft skin from fatty areas of the patient's body when there is not enough breast tissue to cover the implants. The physician will also graft skin from other body areas to create non-functional areolas and nipples. If the patient still has one original breast, the surgeon will reconstruct the missing breast area to create symmetry between the original breast and the new breast.
