Tears are secreted by specials glands that can be found around your eyes. Dryness in the eyes is caused because of an imbalance in the tear system. Some of the symptoms of dryness in the eyes include pain, irritation, itching, light sensitivity, blurred vision and redness of the eyes.
At times, people who suffer from dry eyes could have excess tears running down from their eyes. This is caused when your eyes don't get enough lubrication. The eyes send a signal through the nervous system that they require more lubrication. The nervous system responds by sending excess liquid to compensate for dryness in the eyes. However, this liquid does not have any lubricating qualities and only helps in keeping your eyes moist.
This imbalance in the tear system of your eyes could be caused by many reasons. Some of the common causes for dryness in your eyes include:
Dry air from your heater or air-conditioning system. Changes in the body due to menopause. Side effects of taking certain medications. Diseases that have an adverse impact on your eyes' ability to make tears. Staring continuously at your monitor or television set. Problems in the eye that does not allow you to close your eyelids.
Dryness in the eyes cannot be cured; however you can take steps to treat them. Here are some steps that you can take to treat eye dryness:
Using artificial teardrops is a well-known treatment for dryness in the eyes. There are many medical shops that sell over-the-counter artificial teardrops. There is no single artificial teardrop that works for all people that suffer from dryness in the eyes. You may have to experiment with a few drops before finding the one that works for you. If you suffer from chronic eye dryness, it is important that you use the drops even when you don't feel discomfort. This will ensure your eyes are lubricated and prevent irritation caused due to dryness in the eyes. People, who face discomfort due to dryness in their eyes when they sleep, can use a thick lubricant at night.
At times, the ducts in your eyes can drain the tears out. Initially, temporary plugs are used to prevent the ducts from draining excess water. If the process is successful, permanent plugs may be used to prevent excess draining.
You can also use eye drops to treat dryness in your eyes. It is in your interest to approach your doctor before you start using these drops. Using eye drops will help in improving tear production in the eyes.
Some doctors suggest the use of steroids to treat dry eyes. However, steroids should be used only when other treatments fail.
If medication does not help, you may require surgery to prevent ducts from draining tears into the nose.
