Breast Diep Flap Reconstruction

Many brave women who survive breast cancer must live with the emotional and physical scarring associated with a mastectomy

. A mastectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the tissue from the body in the event of breast cancer. There are options available, however, that can help to restore the feminine look you had before undergoing a mastectomy by reconstructing the area as naturally as possible.

There are a few different procedures available, one of which is called DIEP or Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator, named so for the artery that is connected to the area used in reconstruction. This procedure is also called free flap microsurgery.

What is Free Flap Microsurgery?

A flap is a term used in many different surgical processes and refers to the area of tissue or skin that is removed for the purpose of reattaching to another part of the body. Microsurgery utilizes a microscope and delicate instruments to achieve very exact results.

Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Procedure vs. Other Reconstruction

The advantage of this option over others is that it does not involve any muscle relocation and results in the need for a shorter hospital stay and less recovery time. This surgery is considered to be less risky in terms of the risk of infection or development of a hernia in the abdominal area after the surgery.

Benefits of DIEP

Because the tissue needed for the reconstruction procedure is removed from the abdominal area, DIEP can have an aesthetic effect similar to a tummy tuck. The scar that results after the tissue removal is also lower down and less visible than with other methods. This procedure can also be performed on some patients at the same time as the mastectomy, and produces a very natural result that can be manipulated by the surgeon into a pleasing shape.

Free Flap Microsurgery Recovery

Recovery time generally takes a few overnight stays at the hospital or office where you have your surgery. You will be monitored by your doctor and healthcare professionals to ensure that you are responding well to the procedure. Once you go home, you will have to wear devices that drain the excess fluid from the reconstructed area. These should be removed within a week or two of the initial operation.

Your movement will be limited for the first couple of weeks, but your wounds should heal quickly and you can return to normal activities like driving and shopping after the first month. It can, however, take up to six weeks before you feel ready to go back to your job and full daily routine.
