Inflatable Boats Permanent Repairs

Sustaining a gash on an inflatable boat need not be the end of your boat.  Using a fine needle and a strong polyester thread you can use a baseball stitch to close the slash. The repair does not end there though. You need to patch the stitched slash. Since repair kits normally contain small patches only you might have to source for a bigger patch that matches your boat's fabric from major boat distributors. You need to have at...more

Inflatable Boats Preventive Maintenance

Inflatable boats are tough. However, tough as they are, inflatable boats are prone to a lot of damages not normally encountered by conventional boats. It is imperative that special care should be allotted to your inflatable boat if you want it to last for more than a season or two. Here are some guidelines that you can follow.Don't Chafe the BoatAbrasion is a big factor in inflatable boat maintenance, though oxidation and...more

Inflatable Boats Maintenance: Checking for Leaks

Checking for leaks in your inflatable boat is a process that needs to be done first time you use your boat after months in storage or if you suspect that your inflatable has leaks. Inflate your boat hard.  Make sure it is clean so that its surface has no sand or dirt on it. Pour 2 to 3 ounces of liquid soap and an equal amount of water in a container.  Apply with a 2-inch brush the soap solution over the seams of the boat. If there are leaks, bubbles will appear on the leak.  Mark the leaky part using a grease pencil. To check other parts of the boat, ask someone to help you hold the boat upright and on its side so you can check the inside seams too. If your boat has an inflatable keel, check that too.Paint the inflation valves next with the soap solution.  Make sure the caps are screwed tightly.  If there is slight air-leak, that is expected and normal.  Next, check the outside surface of the tubes. If there are no more visible bubbles indicative of leaks, hose down the boat to free it from the soapy paint.Finding leaks in the bottom fabric is not as easy since the floor is not pressurized. The first step is t leave the boat inflated and inside a dry location....more

Inflatable Boats Maintenance: The Hard Parts

The hard parts of an inflatable boat are the wooden and metal parts. Take care to clean these parts with stiff brush and soap. If there are scratches and abrasions that are deep enough to penetrate the hard parts, then you need to repair any break in the finish to control damage.Wood PartsBreaks on the wooden parts admit water that...more

Inflatable Boats Maintenance: Bottom Paint

Leaving your inflatable boat in the water for more than a few days is a sure indication that marine growth will prosper at the bottom fabric.  Regular bottom paints will not do so well because they will not adhere well to the fabric. Thick paints are just "too thick" to allow for easy storage without cracking the paint.  Thinning...more

Inflatable Boats Names and Numbers

Forget about vinyl peel-and-stick numbers as they will not stick on Hypalon or PVC for long. The vinyl numbers will stick alright but, be ready to install a new one after a few months or so especially if you fold your inflatable boat for stowing. Your best option is to buy glue-on numbers that were manufactured especially for inflatable boats.  These glue-on numbers are available in most marine supply stores.  Choose the appropriate color – dark colored numbers for light colored boats and white colored numbers for dark colored boats.  Installing them is easy as you just have to glue the numbers on the boat just like a repair patch. However, glue-on numbers takes a lot or work as you need to prepare the fabric just like in repairing a patch.  An easy way to number and name your boat is to paint them on the boat using a stencil kit. There are stencil kits available in marine stores. Some kits include primers while other kits have vinyl paint to be painted directly to the boat.  The one with the primer kit is more permanent but you have to consider that the sides of the boat are not susceptible to the harsh environment of its bottom. It's your...more
