Another Great Idea For Children's Birthday Parties

Paint parties are another great idea for children's birthday parties

. First you will need to make your child's birthday party invitations and the best looking paint party invitations are made using bubble art. The best part is that your birthday boy or girl can help - although it is best they remain supervised to avoid breathing in powder paint! All you will need is water, a few straws, dishwashing liquid, primary coloured powder paint, a few sheets of thickish paper and as many empty tin cans as you have different colours of paint.

Pop on an apron and pour about cup of dishwashing liquid into each tin can. In a separate container, mix lots of (1 colour) powder paint with a little bit of water until all the paint is dissolved. Add to one of the cans, mix well into the dishwashing liquid and then rinse out the container so that you can repeat with each of the other paint colours. Use the straw to gently blow bubbles in one can until the bubbles start to flow over the top of the can. Make sure that your child only blows through the straw and does not inhale! Roll the paper around gently on top of bubbles making sure you don't burst them. Repeat the process with several colours for a pretty sheet of multi-coloured paper.

Allow paper to dry fully before cutting up to use as invitations. Make sure that the invitation clearly states the messy nature of the party and asks the guests to come wearing old clothes, bringing an apron or one of dad's old shirts!

Once your invitations are dried, written and sent off, you can start preparing for the big day. Children's birthday parties just need a little advance planning to make them perfect and for a paint party, you just need the right ingredients - a surface to paint, paint and lots of little artists.

The more mess, the more fun, so make sure that you prepare either an outdoor or easily wipeable kitchen area for the party. Get a pile of towels and bowls of warm soapy water to wash off little hands between activities.

A great way to start the party off is to hide pots of paint, paintbrushes, crayons and marker pens around the garden and have the children find them. Then split the children into teams. Either use a few long rolls of paper laid on the ground, or attached to a fence and draw around one member of each team. Have them fill in the outlines with the colouring implements they have found - with a prize for each team (the most colourful, the most outrageous, the most inventive, the most beautiful etc so that every team wins a prize).

Birthday candle painting - Lay sheets of paper around a table (one per child) and place lots of little bowls of watered down poster paint or thin powder paint in the middle. Place a paintbrush on each sheet of paper and hand a white birthday candle to each child. Tell them to draw an invisible pattern /write their name on their piece of paper with the candle...and then show them how to paint over the top so that the pattern or name magically appears! If you choose patterns, don't forget to pencil the child's name on the corner of the sheet so that they can take the right one home after the party.

Birthday balloon decorating - Blow up lots of coloured balloons and have each child pick one. Put bowls of decorations including stickers, glue, balls of crepe paper, glitter, googley eyes and anything else you can think of on a table and have each child decorate their balloon.

Children of this age won't need much to eat within a 2hr long party, so stick to simple treats that adhere to the arty theme. Splodge a dollop of brightly coloured icing onto plain biscuits. Use food colouring to create 4 brightly primary coloured jellies and serve with a scoop of icecream. Cut a couple of ready made pizza bases into the shape of easels complete with the thumb hole and cover with splotches of yellow cheese and red tomato paste. Serve the food in the middle of a table edged with placemats made of sheets from a colouring book - include a crayon at each place setting

The easiest birthday cake is also the most attractive. Simply buy or bake enough cupcakes to spell out your child's name and thickly ice them in bright primary coloured icing. Buy a large sheet of card (black/white/your child's favourite colour - it doesn't matter) and alternate red blue yellow and green cupcakes on the card to spell out your child's name, leaving an extra couple of inches between each one. Trace around them, then remove and using an extra fat paintbrush, splodge a fat splash of poster paint to match the cup cake icing colour. When dried, replace the cakes and add candles as appropriate. The cupcakes will look like overfilled paint-pots.

At the end of the party, the children will each have a brightly iced cupcake to take home along with their homemade pieces of art and a self decorated balloon plus their prize from the first game. Round off the party by writing, 'Thank you for coming from 'your child's name' on small packs of crayons and hand them out as a going home time gift.
